Military Time Conversion Table

Military time counts the hours of the day from 00 to 23 with no AM or PM, so 3:30 PM is 1530. It’s used by the armed forces, hospitals, aviation, emergency services and much of the world as the everyday clock. This page converts times both ways, shows how each time is spoken, calculates durations that cross midnight, and prints a full conversion table.

How to convert

DirectionRuleExample
AM to militaryUse the hour as is, adding a leading zero; 12 AM becomes 007:05 AM → 0705; 12:30 AM → 0030
PM to militaryAdd 12 to the hour, except 12 PM stays 123:30 PM → 1530; 12:15 PM → 1215
Military to PMSubtract 12 from hours 13–231845 → 6:45 PM
Military to AMHours 00–11 are AM; 00 is 12 AM0020 → 12:20 AM

The two tricky times are noon and midnight: 12:00 PM (noon) is 1200 and 12:00 AM (midnight) is 0000.

How military time is spoken

“Hours” is often added in formal military speech. Colons are usually left out when writing military time, while many civilian 24-hour clocks write 15:30.

Worked example: a night shift

A nurse works from 2200 to 0630. Converting: 2200 is 10:00 PM and 0630 is 6:30 AM. Because the end time is earlier than the start, the shift crosses midnight: add 24 hours to the end (0630 becomes 3030), subtract 2200, and get 8 hours 30 minutes. With a 30-minute unpaid break, that is 8 hours paid. The duration calculator above does this automatically.

Zulu time and time zones

Military and aviation schedules often use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), called Zulu time in the military, to avoid confusion across time zones. It is written with a Z: 1400Z is 14:00 UTC. Local times use other letters for each zone; the US Eastern time zone is Romeo (R) in standard time. To convert Zulu to local, add or subtract your offset from UTC — for example, 1400Z is 0900 in US Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5).

Common conversion mistakes

MistakeCorrect
12:30 AM written as 12300030 — just after midnight
12:30 PM written as 00301230 — just after noon
1300 read as 1 AM1 PM
Writing 830 instead of 0830Always use four digits
2400 and 0000 mixed upUse 0000 for the start of a day
Forgetting “hours” changes nothingIt’s optional — 1500 and 1500 hours are the same

Quick mental conversion

For afternoon and evening times, subtract 12 in your head: 1745 minus 12 hours is 5:45 PM. Or remember the pattern that 1300 is 1 PM, 1400 is 2 PM and so on — the second digit is two less than the PM hour. For morning times, the military time is the same as the clock, just with a leading zero: 0915 is 9:15 AM. The only exceptions are the midnight hour (00xx, which is 12xx AM) and the noon hour (12xx, which is PM).

Military time in schedules and forms

Why 24-hour time avoids mistakes

In 12-hour time, “8:00” could mean morning or evening, and AM/PM is easy to miss when writing quickly. A 24-hour time is unique: 0800 and 2000 can’t be confused. That’s why settings where mistakes are costly — medicine, transport and operations — use it. In medical charting, writing times as four digits also avoids misreading.
